New Delhi, 13/01/2025: India’s coal import dropped in November falling to 19.57 million tonnes from 22.30 MT in November of the previous year.
However, India’s coal import increased by 2% , reaching 182.02 million tonnes from April to November this year compared to 178.17 MT last year, according to mjunction services ltd.
Vinaya Varma, MD and CEO of mjunction, explained that the drop was due to enough coal being available in India, which reduced the need for imports. Industries like steel and sponge iron, along with power plants, had enough coal stock.
This trend of lower imports is expected to continue. Non-coking coal imports slightly decreased to 117.73 MT from 118 MT last year, and coking coal imports also fell from 37.97 MT to 36.93 MT.
The government is working to increase domestic coal production to reduce the need for imports. Currently, businesses can import coal as needed.
Steel companies like Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) mostly import coking coal, while non-coking coal is used by power plants, cement factories, and other industries. Coke is imported for use in mini-blast furnaces by pig-iron makers and the iron and steel industry.
