Ranchi, 23/01/2025: The Rarh Bengal Tigers defeated the Delhi SG Pipers 2-0 in a must-win match of the Women’s Hockey India League (2024-25) on Wednesday at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium. Kathryn Mullan was the hero of the game, scoring both goals to keep the Tigers in the race for the playoffs.
The first quarter was a tight contest, with both teams fighting for control in the midfield. The Tigers had the only real chance when they won a penalty corner in the 13th minute, but the SG Pipers’ defense stopped Captain Udita’s attempt.
In the second quarter, the Tigers took the lead. In the 21st minute, Mullan skillfully brought the ball to the edge of the circle and, with her back to the goal, scored past SG Pipers’ goalkeeper Bansari Solanki.
The Tigers struck again early in the third quarter. Lalremsiami made an impressive solo run down the right side and along the goal line before passing to Mullan, who tapped in her second goal of the night.
The SG Pipers tried hard to respond, creating 13 circle penetrations in the third quarter alone. But the Tigers’ defense, led by goalkeeper Jennifer Rizzo, stood strong and allowed only three shots on goal.
The final quarter saw the SG Pipers push for a goal, but the Tigers stayed solid at the back to secure a crucial win.
This victory gives the Bengal Tigers seven points, keeping them three points behind JSW Soorma Club and Odisha Warriors. To make it to the playoffs, the Tigers will need a big win in their last match against the Soorma Hockey Club.
