Jajpur, 20/02/2025: Tata Steel’s Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division (FAMD) has taken a big step toward eco-friendly transportation by exporting ferrochrome using a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) truck for the first time. This trial, conducted at its Jajpur Ferro Alloys plant, helps reduce the company’s carbon footprint and supports its commitment to sustainability. By using CNG trucks instead of diesel ones to transport ferrochrome from Jajpur to Vizag, Tata Steel has cut CO₂ emissions by 20-25%. This initiative was carried out in partnership with One Supply Chain, Tata Steel and M/S CJ Darcel.
The launch of the CNG truck was attended by key Tata Steel officials, including Amit Chaubey (Head of Logistics, FAMD), Alok Kumar Panda (Chief of FAP Jajpur), Soumya Basu (Senior Area Manager, Logistics – FG, FAMD), and Munmun Tah (Senior Area Manager, Procurement & Transport – Raw Material). Pankaj Satija, CEO of Tata Steel FMD, highlighted that using clean fuel in logistics is part of the company’s larger plan to reduce carbon emissions. Tata Steel is also testing electric vehicle (EV) trucks at its Jajpur plant for short-distance transportation of ferrochrome and other materials.
Along with CNG and EV trucks, Tata Steel is focusing on multi-modal transportation, using coastal shipping routes via Paradip and Vizag ports to make logistics more efficient and eco-friendlier. These initiatives are part of Tata Steel’s long-term goal to adopt greener transport options that help reduce pollution while improving supply chain efficiency. The successful CNG truck trial is a major milestone in making Tata Steel’s transportation system cleaner and more sustainable.
