Bhubaneswar, 22.03.2025: Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, is taking big steps to help communities save water. In FY25, the company renovated 81 community ponds and plans to build 20 more farm ponds, adding 10,000 cubic meters of water storage. In Lanjigarh, its alumina refinery has improved water recharge by 2 lakh cubic meters, helping over 500 farmers irrigate 170 acres of land. Drip irrigation and other smart farming methods have also saved 1 lakh cubic meters of water, benefiting more than 2,000 people.
In Jharsuguda, Vedanta has upgraded its sewage treatment plant, which now processes 240 kilolitres of water daily. The treated water is reused for growing trees and plants. To support local farmers, the company built a new farm pond on World Water Day. At its mining sites, it has improved rainwater harvesting and restored ponds, increasing water storage by 75,000 cubic meters. Other efforts, like installing bio-toilets, solar-powered borewells, and digital water flow meters, are making water use more efficient.
Sunil Gupta, Chief Operating Officer of Vedanta Aluminium, said that water is a shared and precious resource. He explained that the company is not only focused on saving water in its factories but also helping local people get better access to clean water. Vedanta aims to become “Net Water Positive” by 2030, meaning it will save more water than it uses. To achieve this, the company is using new technologies, better water management, and working closely with local communities.
To celebrate World Water Day, Vedanta is raising awareness about water conservation. The company is organizing a week-long “Identify the Leak” contest, creative competitions, and webinars on water-saving methods. These activities encourage employees and local people to learn about water conservation and take action to protect this valuable resource.
