Bhubaneswar, 25.03.2025: The Odisha state assembly was filled with intense discussions as legislators debated the future of the state’s mineral wealth. Ranendra strongly argued that all mining operations should be handed over to the Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) to ensure fair pricing and prevent massive financial losses. He also emphasized the need to preserve resources for future generations, warning that uncontrolled mining could lead to long-term consequences.
However, not everyone agreed. Ganeshwar Behera raised concerns about rampant illegal mining, pointing out that while small offenders were being caught, large-scale smugglers continued to operate freely. His frustration was evident as he questioned why authorities had failed to take strict action against major mineral theft. Meanwhile, BJP MLA Manas Dutt accused the previous government of turning the mining department into a center of corruption, recalling the arrest of Raja Chakra over a mining scandal.
Amid these heated debates, some legislators focused on a more sustainable future. Puri MLA Sunil Mohanty suggested increasing the number of EV charging stations in the state to encourage the use of electric vehicles. Another proposal came from Konark, where a legislator recommended introducing seaplanes to boost tourism and create new economic opportunities. These ideas brought a fresh perspective to the discussion, shifting attention toward innovation and development.
Despite these forward-thinking proposals, the assembly remained divided. While some opposed the proposed budget, arguing it did not address key issues, others supported it as a step toward economic stability. The session ended without a clear resolution, leaving the future of Odisha’s mining policies and overall development open for further debate.
