Bhubaneswar, 01.04.2025: Odisha, a state rich in natural resources, has become an important industrial hub in India, especially in the metals and mining sector. This growth is driven by the state’s vast mineral reserves, a skilled workforce, and a business-friendly environment. Vedanta Aluminium has played a significant role in this transformation, helping the state grow by investing in industries that provide jobs and improve the local economy.
Recently, Vedanta announced an investment of ₹1 lakh crore to build a new aluminium plant and an aluminium park in Jharsuguda. This investment will create 200,000 new jobs and bring in ₹4,500 crores to Odisha’s economy. With Odisha holding 41% of India’s bauxite resources, the state is key to meeting the rising demand for aluminium, which is crucial for green technologies that support India’s move towards cleaner energy.
Vedanta’s presence in Odisha includes its world-leading 1.8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) smelter in Jharsuguda and a 3.5 MTPA alumina refinery in Lanjigarh. These operations have created over 20,000 small and medium-sized businesses in the region and helped raise Odisha’s share of India’s economic output. The company’s mining operations also provide direct and indirect job opportunities, benefiting many remote areas.
Beyond business, Vedanta has also focused on improving healthcare, education, and gender equality. The company has set up 531 modern Anganwadi centers for children and women and operates a hospital in Lanjigarh that serves over 67,000 people yearly. It has also empowered women by employing them in night shifts and operating India’s first fully women-run aluminium plant. Through its ‘Project Panchhi,’ Vedanta is helping young women pursue higher education and build careers in the industry.
