Reinforcing its strong commitment towards the holistic socio-economic development of local communities, Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, has partnered with veteran Olympian Rahul Banerjee to train over 80 promising tribal youths from Kalahandi district in the sport of archery. The initiative aims to nurture grassroots sporting talent and provide them with world-class exposure, helping them excel at both national and international platforms.
It is pertinent to note that Rahul Banerjee, one of India’s most decorated archers, has represented the country in over 50 international tournaments, earning several laurels including a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. A true inspiration for aspiring athletes, he has also been the national champion eight times, bringing immense experience and expertise to this initiative.
Expressing his excitement, the ace archer and mentor Rahul Banerjee said, “Kalahandi is full of natural talent and potential in archery. The local youth, especially from tribal communities, possess exceptional focus, strength, and determination — qualities that are essential for success in this sport. With structured training and proper guidance, these youngsters can definitely achieve glory and make their mark at the international level. I am honoured to be associated with Vedanta Aluminium in this noble initiative that aims to transform lives through sports.”

Vedanta Aluminium first launched this sports development initiative in 2018 at its Lanjigarh operations in Kalahandi district. Since then, it has become a strong platform for identifying and nurturing raw talent from rural and tribal areas. The company provides professional coaching, quality equipment, modern infrastructure, and regular exposure through competitive events.
As a result of sustained training and mentorship, more than 100 local youths have already been groomed into skilled archers. Many of them have gone on to represent the district and state in various championships. In 2024 alone, these young archers collectively secured over 40 medals at both state and national levels, bringing pride to Kalahandi and inspiring many others to follow in their footsteps.
With the support of experts like Rahul Banerjee, Vedanta Aluminium aims to further expand the reach of this programme, ensuring that sporting excellence continues to emerge from the heart of rural Odisha.
