Bhubaneswar, 20.05.2025– India has put a 12% safeguard duty on steel imports to protect its local industry. This step comes after countries like the United States, Canada, and Mexico raised their import taxes on steel and aluminium by 25%, affecting the global metal market. With many countries facing trade problems, India’s move is meant to keep its own steel market safe.
Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal praised the government’s decision and said similar steps should be taken for the aluminium industry. In a post on LinkedIn, he explained how aluminium is becoming more important than steel because it is lightweight and easy to recycle. He said this is a good chance for India to become a global leader in aluminium.
Agarwal said aluminium is used in many things we rely on—like air planes, trains, cars, homes, and even mobile phones. With India having large bauxite reserves (used to make aluminium) and a growing demand for the metal, he believes the country is in a strong position to lead the world in aluminium production.
He also said that because of trade barriers, some countries are now looking for new partners. This gives India a big opportunity. If the government supports the local aluminium industry the same way it is helping steel, India can become a key supplier for many countries in the future.
