Mumbai, 09/07/2025: Adani Power Ltd has bought a 600-megawatt coal based power plant from Vidarbha Industries Power Ltd (VIPL) for ₹4,000 crore. The plant is located in Butibori, in nagpur district of Maharashtra. This purchase was made through the insolvency process.
The deal was approved on June 18 by the Mumbai Bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), which handles cases related to bankruptcy and insolvency. With this new addition, Adani Power’s total power capacity has increased to 18,150 MW.
The company has set a goal to reach 30,670 MW capacity by the year 2029-30. To meet this target, Adani Power is working on expanding its base-load power generation using a mix of old (brownfield) and new (greenfield) power projects.
Currently, the company is building six new ultra-supercritical thermal power plants. Each of these power plants will have a capacity of 1,600 MW. These plants are being built at different locations including Singrauli-Mahan in Madhya Pradesh, Raipur and Raigarh in Chhattisgarh, Korba in Chhattisgarh, and Kawai in Rajasthan.
In addition to these, the company is setting up a new 1,600-MW greenfield plant in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. Adani Power had already acquired a 1,320-MW supercritical power plant in Korba earlier.
The recent VIPL acquisition is part of the company’s broader strategy to grow its power generation capacity and strengthen its position in the energy sector. By using both brownfield and greenfield methods, Adani Power aims to build a more efficient and cleaner thermal power network.
This expansion also helps the company serve India’s increasing demand for electricity, especially in growing industrial and urban areas.
With the completion of these projects, Adani Power will be able to supply more power across the country and contribute to the country’s energy security.
