Berhampur, March 6: In a major crackdown, the local Police busted a Mumbai-style child begging racket in the city. As many as nine minors were rescued. Five accused have been arrested in this connection.
According to reports, the children, were forced to beg at traffic posts by the pimps. The children aged were in the age group of four months to the oldest being only 12 years old.
Acting on a tip-off the officials formed a special team to bust the begging racket in Berhampur on Tuesday. Mani Sindhe (65), Ajaya Kajri Sindhe (30), Rani Sindhe (30), Puja Pawar (20) and Sita Pawar (40) have been arrested, informed Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M.
The accused allegedly forced the children to beg at traffic signals. They were rescued and produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) as a trafficking probe begun.
During the verification, the accused reportedly failed to produce Aadhaar cards, voter ID cards or any other identification documents.
