Bhagalpur, Bihar, 08/08/2025: Adani Power Ltd. has announced a major new project that is set to change the energy landscape of Bihar. The company shared that it has received a Letter of Intent (LoI) from the Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd. (BSPGCL) to build a large-scale power plant in the Bhagalpur district. This new project, worth around $3 billion, will help provide a steady supply of electricity to the state and create thousands of jobs in the process.
The thermal power plant will be built in Pirpainti village, located in the Bhagalpur district. Once completed, it will generate 2,400 megawatts (MW) of power. Out of this, 2,274 MW will be supplied directly to Bihar to support the state’s growing energy needs. The power will be delivered to the North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd. (NBPDCL) and the South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd. (SBPDCL).
This project is a major step forward for the state, which has been working to improve its electricity infrastructure. With more consistent and reliable power, Bihar will be in a better position to grow its industries, attract investment, and improve the quality of life for its people.
Adani Power secured the project through a competitive bidding process, emerging as the lowest bidder. The company offered a final supply tariff of Rs 6.075 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), which helped it win the contract.
The plant will use ultra-supercritical technology, which is more advanced and efficient than traditional thermal power methods. This technology helps produce electricity while using less fuel and creating fewer emissions, making it a better option for the environment. The plant will follow the DBFOO model, which means Adani Power will design, build, finance, own, and operate the entire facility.
S.B. Khyalia, the Chief Executive Officer of Adani Power, expressed his enthusiasm about the project. “We are pleased to have won the bid to develop and operate a 2,400 MW thermal power project in Bihar. We will set up a new greenfield plant with an investment of ~$3 billion, which is expected to further aid industrialization in the state. Our plant will be an advanced, low-emission Ultra-supercritical one, and will supply dependable, competitively priced, and high-quality power to the state,” he said.
The construction of the plant will be carried out in phases. The first unit of the power plant is expected to be ready within 48 months from the official start date, while the entire project will be completed within 60 months.
One of the most exciting aspects of this project is the number of jobs it will create. Adani Power estimates that around 10,000 to 12,000 jobs will be generated during the construction phase alone. Once the plant is up and running, it will provide employment to approximately 3,000 people. This is a big opportunity for local workers and will give a significant boost to the regional economy.
To power the plant, coal will be supplied under the Government of India’s SHAKTI policy, which stands for Scheme for Harnessing and Allocating Koyala Transparently in India. This policy ensures that coal is distributed fairly and efficiently to power producers across the country.
Adani Power expects to receive a formal Letter of Award (LoA) soon. After that, the company will sign a Power Supply Agreement (PSA) with the state power distribution companies, officially kicking off the project.
This new thermal power project could be a game changer for Bihar. With more reliable electricity, businesses can run smoothly, homes can stay lit, and communities can grow stronger. The investment from Adani Power not only brings modern technology to the region but also creates new opportunities for employment and economic development.
As Bihar continues to modernize its infrastructure, projects like this one will play a key role in shaping the future of the state. With clean, reliable, and affordable energy, Bihar is on track to become a hub for growth and progress.
