Madhya Pradesh, 04.06.2025: Coal India has started using the country’s first electric rope shovel made in India. It has been installed at the Nigahi Project in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh, which is run by Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), a part of Coal India. The machine was built by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and is an important step towards making India more self-reliant under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission.
This large shovel can lift 20 cubic metres at a time. It has a strong boom and bucket, an air-conditioned cabin for the operator, and systems to check and monitor the machine’s performance in real time. It can handle about 4.45 million cubic metres of material every year and comes with safety and fault detection features.
At the launch event, several senior officials attended, including Coal India’s Chairman P.M. Prasad, Director (HR) Dr. Vinay Ranjan, Director (Technical) Achyut Ghatak, BEML CMD Shantanu Roy, and NCL CMD B. Sairam. In a virtual message, Chairman Prasad said that this new machine will play an important role in Coal India’s work and help reduce the need to buy such equipment from other countries.
