Assam, 19/06/2025: State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is bringing in international experts to help control a natural gas leak from one of its wells in Assam, which has been releasing gas uncontrollably for over a week.
The incident occurred on June 13 at around 11:45 am during servicing work at Well No. RDS-147, when gas suddenly began gushing out. Although there were no injuries, the gas leak has continued since then. ONGC’s in-house experts have been working around the clock and are consulting with an international well control agency. The process of mobilising their team to the site is underway.
To reduce the uncontrolled flow, ONGC has connected the well to a nearby production facility to divert some of the gas safely. Water is also being used continuously to blanket the well as a safety precaution.
According to the Assam Pollution Control Board, air quality around the site remains within safe limits as per national standards. Tests confirm the leaked gas is non-toxic and disperses quickly as it is lighter than air. Noise levels are also under control beyond a 500-metre radius.
Access to the site is currently restricted to operational staff, and ONGC says it is following all safety protocols and regulatory guidelines to protect nearby communities and the environment.
