The government has made improvements to its Coal Import Monitoring System (CIMS), a digital platform that helps track coal imports. This system makes it easier to collect accurate and timely data, which helps the government make better decisions about coal and energy policies.
According to the Coal Ministry, this update supports India’s goal of becoming more self-reliant by helping reduce unnecessary coal imports and encouraging local production.
As part of the update, the government has also made the registration fee for using the CIMS portal simpler. Now, importers will pay a flat fee of ₹500 per shipment. Earlier, the fee ranged from ₹500 to ₹1 lakh. This change makes CIMS similar to other systems used for importing steel, non-ferrous metals, and paper.
Importers still need to register on the CIMS website and include the registration number in their customs documents when bringing coal into the country.
The ministry said it will continue to make trade easier, increase transparency, and improve the rules to support India’s industries and energy needs.
