Mumbai, 17/04/2025: India is leading the way in making steel in a cleaner, more eco-friendly way. The government is introducing the world’s first “Green Steel Taxonomy”-a new set of rules that will help steel companies reduce pollution and follow better environmental practices. These rules are expected to start in the financial year 2026-27.
To support this move, steel companies are preparing for big changes. One of them, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AM/NS) India, has announced that it will invest ₹60,000 crore. The money will be used to increase production, improve how scrap metal is reused, and use more renewable energy like solar and wind.
Right now, about 65% of the steel made by AM/NS India already uses a cleaner method called the Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) route, which uses natural gas. The company is planning more steps to reduce its carbon emissions and hopes to earn a top three-star rating under the new green steel system.
Dilip Oommen, CEO of AM/NS India, said, “India’s new green steel rules are a big step toward cutting pollution and reaching net-zero emissions by 2070. We are fully committed to this vision and are getting ready for the change.”
