New Delhi, 04/02/2025: India’s mineral production has been growing steadily in the Financial Year 2024-25 (April-December), driven by strong demand, especially from the steel industry. Key minerals like iron ore, manganese, chromite, and bauxite have seen significant increases in production.
Iron ore, which makes up 69% of India’s total mineral production value, reached 274 million metric tonnes (MMT) in FY 2023-24. In FY 2024-25, production increased from 203 MMT (April-December) to 208 MMT, a 2.5% growth.
Manganese ore production grew by 8.3%, from 2.4 MMT in FY 2023-24 (April-December) to 2.6 MMT in FY 2024-25. Chromite production went up by 9.5%, from 2.1 MMT to 2.3 MMT, and bauxite production rose by 6.5%, from 17.0 MMT to 18.1 MMT.
In the non-ferrous metal sector, aluminium production grew by 1.6%, reaching 31.56 lakh tonnes (LT) in FY 2024-25 (April-December), compared to 31.07 LT in FY 2023-24. Refined copper production also saw a 7.3% increase, rising from 3.69 LT to 3.96 LT during the same period.
This growth in mineral production shows India’s growing presence in the global market. India is now the second-largest producer of aluminium, one of the top producers of refined copper, and the fourth-largest producer of iron ore worldwide. The continued demand for these minerals indicates a bright future for India’s mineral industry.
