Kolkata,18/04/2025: JSW Energy is set to play a major role in strengthening West Bengal’s power supply with a large thermal power project. The company will develop a 1,600 MW super/ultra-supercritical thermal power plant at Salboni in Paschim Medinipur. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will lay the foundation stone for the ₹16,000 crore project on April 21. The plant will have two units of 800 MW each and is expected to be completed in five years.
The project was awarded to JSW Energy through a competitive bidding process held by the West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd (WBPDCL). To ensure a steady supply of coal, the plant will use domestic coal allocated under the central government’s SHAKTI B (iv) policy. JSW Energy has already signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement with the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL) for the entire 1,600 MW of power.
This project marks a major step for JSW Energy in expanding its presence in eastern India. The company’s involvement comes as part of the state government’s broader strategy to meet rising electricity demand. With more homes and industries using power, JSW’s new plant will help West Bengal deliver stable and reliable electricity to its people.
In addition to the thermal project, the state is also focusing on solar power and other future-ready energy solutions. But JSW Energy’s investment highlights how private companies are working closely with the state to build large-scale energy infrastructure. This partnership between the government and the private sector is key to West Bengal’s plan for long-term energy security and growth.
