New Delhi, 29/01/2025: India is moving closer to making its own semiconductors with Micron Technology’s upcoming Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat. Built by Tata Projects, this $2.75 billion plant will help India become an important player in the global chip industry.
The factory, covering 50 acres in the Sanand industrial area, is India’s first of its kind. According to Amit Agrawal, Project Director at Tata Projects, 60% of the construction is already done. The r the facility will be handed over to Micron by December 2025.
“This is one of the world’s largest back-end semiconductor plants, with 3,500 workers building it. Once it starts running, it will strengthen India’s semiconductor industry and create nearly 5,000 direct jobs and 15,000 indirect jobs,” Agrawal said.
In June 2023, the Gujarat government signed an agreement with Micron to bring this project to India. The facility will help reduce reliance on imported semiconductors and encourage investment in the sector.
With government support through programs like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, this plant is a big step toward India becoming a major player in semiconductor manufacturing.
