Delhi, 20/05/2025: Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) is working to increase the production of important raw materials like iron ore as it aims to grow its steel-making capacity to 35 million tonnes per year by 2030.
To support this goal, the Steel Ministry is considering creating a separate unit within SAIL that will focus only on mining. A senior government official said that discussions are happening at the ministry level and once the structure is ready, it will be shared with the company.
Iron ore is the main ingredient used to make steel through the blast furnace method. SAIL, one of India’s largest steel companies, already has its own iron ore mines. In 2024–25, it produced 33.78 million tonnes of iron ore, along with smaller amounts of coal, limestone, and dolomite.
SAIL is the third-largest iron ore producer in the country and runs 15 iron ore mines in Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. It also operates coal and flux (limestone and dolomite) mines.
With big plans to increase steel production, SAIL needs more raw materials. The new mining unit is expected to help the company manage its mines better and produce more to meet future demand.
SAIL has not yet responded to a request for comments on the proposal.
