Ranchi, 16/01/2025: Savita Punia’s incredible goalkeeping helped Soorma Hockey Club secure a hard-fought 2-1 win over Odisha Warriors in the Women’s Hockey India League on Wednesday. The victory moved Soorma to the top of the table and reinforced their position as the team to beat in the tournament.
Hina Bano gave Soorma an early lead in the 6th minute with a smart deflection after a quick counterattack by Ajmina Kujur. In the final quarter, Sonam doubled the lead in the 47th minute with a well-placed shot set up by Charlotte Englebert. Odisha’s Freeke Moes kept her team in the game, scoring a late goal in the 57th minute, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide.
Punia, India’s star goalkeeper, was the backbone of Soorma’s defense. She made crucial saves throughout the match, denying Odisha’s attacks, including penalty corners and shots from Moes and Yibbi Jansen.
Odisha, led by coach Janneke Schopman, had a strong team but struggled to finish their chances. Moes was their standout player, creating several opportunities and finally scoring late in the game with a brilliant reverse hit.
Despite Odisha’s late push, Soorma held on for their second win, proving their strength in the competition. With Punia in top form, Soorma has set a high standard for the rest of the tournament.
