Andhra Pradesh, 08/08/2025: Steel Exchange India Ltd (SEIL), a leading player in the steel sector, has announced a significant step towards diversifying its operations by venturing into logistics infrastructure. The company has signed a non-binding agreement with Vizag Profiles Logistics (VPL) and Hind Terminals Pvt. Ltd. (HTPL) to explore the development of a General Cargo Terminal (GCT) and a Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) in Visakhapatnam.
The proposed project is aimed at strengthening cargo movement in the region by improving logistics efficiency, reducing transit times, and offering scalable cargo handling solutions. With Visakhapatnam already emerging as a strategic trade hub, the collaboration is expected to add considerable value to domestic as well as international cargo operations routed through the Vizag port.
According to SEIL, the partnership will focus on creating state-of-the-art facilities that can support growing demand from industries across Andhra Pradesh and neighboring states. Modern warehouses, integrated transport solutions, and advanced cargo handling equipment are among the features being considered to make the proposed GCT and MMLP a benchmark in regional logistics.
Suresh Kumar Bandi, Joint Managing Director of SEIL, said the initiative is in line with the company’s vision of expanding beyond its traditional steel business. “This collaboration is a strategic step forward to expand our capabilities and contribute to the region’s economic growth. By enhancing logistics infrastructure, we aim to facilitate faster, safer, and more reliable cargo movement, which in turn will benefit trade, industry, and communities at large,” he remarked.
SEIL, part of the Vizag Profiles Group, currently operates an integrated steel plant and a power unit at Vizianagaram near Visakhapatnam. The company, which has established itself as a key player in the steel industry, is increasingly leveraging its presence to diversify into allied sectors. Its decision to explore logistics is being seen as a natural extension of its core operations, given the vital role transport and cargo management play in the supply chain for heavy industries.
The announcement also comes on the heels of a major order win for the company. SEIL recently secured a ₹210 crore contract from state-run Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) to convert 1.2 lakh tonnes per annum (LTPA) of billets into TMT rebars. The deal adds further strength to SEIL’s portfolio while underscoring its ability to meet large-scale industrial requirements.
Industry observers believe that if the proposed cargo terminal and logistics park materialise, they could significantly boost Visakhapatnam’s standing as a logistics hub. Enhanced connectivity and better infrastructure would not only support local industries but also create opportunities for trade expansion into global markets.
The collaboration between SEIL, VPL, and HTPL marks a forward-looking move that aligns with India’s broader push to modernise logistics and infrastructure. For Andhra Pradesh, it represents yet another step towards cementing its reputation as a gateway for commerce and industry on the eastern coast.
