New Delhi, December 16, 2024: Vedanta Aluminium, the largest aluminium producer in India and a leader in sustainability has reinforced its environmental leadership by collaborating with PwC India to launch significant biodiversity and carbon reduction initiatives in Odisha. This partnership continues the company’s legacy of promoting sustainable development through groundbreaking ecological and community-centered approaches.
Vedanta, through a newly signed MoU with PwC India, is launching transformative initiatives to restore ecosystems, build climate resilience, and uplift communities. The collaboration focuses on biodiversity conservation and carbon reduction using innovative tools and global practices. Key projects include carbon sequestration to generate credits, GIS mapping to restore native flora, energy-efficient stoves to reduce emissions, and Miyawaki techniques to boost biodiversity and carbon absorption.
These initiatives include restoring degraded lands to achieve No Net Loss of biodiversity, guided by comprehensive habitat development plans in collaboration with local NGOs and Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs). To reduce carbon emissions, Vedanta Aluminium plans to distribute 2,000 improved cookstoves to local communities, promoting cleaner cooking practices that enhance air quality and lower traditional biomass fuel consumption.
Additionally, the company will tackle ecological imbalances by removing invasive species and reintroducing native vegetation through GIS-based mapping and seasonal restoration strategies. It will also establish dense, fast-growing forests using proven techniques to significantly enhance carbon sequestration. Together, these efforts reflect Vedanta Aluminium’s strong commitment to sustainable development and environmental responsibility.
Commenting on the collaboration, Sunil Gupta, COO of Vedanta Aluminium, stated, “This partnership with PwC is a testament to our focus on sustainable growth and ecological stewardship.
