Bhubaneswar, 22/08/2025: Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has carried out a week-long health awareness campaign to fight malaria, dengue and diarrhoea in its operational areas. The initiative covered 28 villages, two special schools and one old age home, directly reaching more than 3,000 people through interactive sessions and demonstrations.
The campaign focused on educating communities about the causes and prevention of mosquito-borne and sanitation-related diseases, which tend to rise during the monsoon season. Residents were taught how malaria, dengue and diarrhoea spread, the early warning signs to look out for, and practical preventive steps such as eliminating stagnant water, covering drinking water containers, using mosquito nets, maintaining hygiene and practicing safe waste disposal.
To make the learning more practical, health workers conducted live demonstrations on proper hand-washing techniques and safe water storage methods, while also explaining the importance of keeping the surroundings clean. The sessions were conducted in local languages and adapted for children, adults and the elderly. Informative leaflets and posters were distributed to reinforce the messages and ensure families had reference material to follow at home.
Sunil Gupta, Chief Operating Officer of Vedanta Aluminium, said the campaign reflected the company’s long-term focus on inclusive development. “Good health and hygiene are essential for a strong community. Campaigns like this empower people to protect themselves and their families, and also create a collective sense of responsibility towards better living standards,” he said.
Dr. Sri Jayanarayan Pujari, who led the initiative, underlined the importance of bridging knowledge gaps in rural areas. “Many people were not aware that simple practices like covering water containers or washing hands properly can prevent serious diseases. These sessions filled an important gap, and it was very encouraging to see participation from both children and adults,” he said.
The campaign also drew positive responses from the ground. Teachers at the special schools reported that children quickly picked up the hand-washing demonstrations and began reminding one another about hygiene before meals. Residents of several villages initiated voluntary cleanliness drives, taking cues from the campaign to monitor stagnant water and reduce mosquito breeding.
Vedanta Aluminium has been implementing multiple community welfare initiatives in Odisha, including mobile health camps, maternal and child healthcare services, and nutrition awareness drives. According to the company, these programmes are intended to complement government healthcare services and strengthen resilience at the grassroots level.
By carrying out this campaign, Vedanta Aluminium has reinforced its commitment to public health in its operational regions. The initiative is expected to reduce the risk of seasonal disease outbreaks and encourage sustainable hygiene practices among thousands of families.
