Bhubaneswar, May 13, 2025: In a significant move towards environmental stewardship, Vedanta Aluminium has strengthened its green commitment by installing 321 solar-powered streetlights across several gram panchayats in Sundargarh and Jharsuguda districts, including Jharpalam, Mundelkhet, Garanjore, Kuraloi, Banjari, Lakhanpur, and Belpahar.
This initiative is part of Vedanta Aluminium’s broader mission to reduce carbon emissions and build sustainable infrastructure in its operational areas. The solar street lighting project alone is expected to cut down approximately 22 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, marking a tangible step toward India’s renewable energy goals.
Highlighting the environmental impact of the project, Vedanta Aluminium Chief Operating Officer Sunil Gupta said, “Sustainability is at the core of our operations. This solar lighting initiative not only fosters clean energy adoption but also demonstrates how industrial players can contribute meaningfully to climate action and rural development.”
Beyond the ecological benefits, the solar lights also bring practical improvements to community life. Installed in key locations such as marketplaces, village entrances, bus stands, schools, and main roads, these lights are improving night-time visibility, boosting safety, and enabling greater mobility for over 10,000 residents.
Community leaders have lauded Vedanta’s efforts. Mr. Sanyasi Bag, Sarpanch of Munderkhet GP in Hemgir Block (Sundargarh), remarked, “Vedanta’s green initiative has made our villages safer and more livable. Their work reflects a genuine understanding of our community’s needs.”
Through such interventions, Vedanta continues to align its operations with the principles of sustainable and inclusive development, setting a benchmark for responsible industry practices in India.
