Mumbai, 21.02.2025: Vedanta Group, led by billionaire Anil Agarwal, is taking a bold step towards energy self-sufficiency by seeking global partners to develop 5 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear power capacity in India. The company aims to use this nuclear energy exclusively for its own operations, reinforcing its commitment to long-term energy security.
In a public announcement, Vedanta invited expressions of interest from experienced global nuclear firms to design, construct, and operate the plants as turnkey projects. The company will provide the land, infrastructure support, and regulatory clearances, with initial bids due within 30 days. This initiative aligns with Vedanta’s broader energy strategy, which includes 9,000 MW of thermal power and 4,000 MW of renewables under development, with a goal of reaching 20,000 MW in three years.
The move comes amid India’s efforts to open up nuclear power generation to private firms. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently announced legislative changes to liability laws, removing a key hurdle that has long deterred private investment in the sector. Vedanta’s initiative follows Tata Power’s interest in small modular reactors, marking a new era for private participation in India’s nuclear energy landscape.
