Bhubaneswar, 27.03.2025: India’s largest aluminium producer, Vedanta Aluminium, has taken a major step in enhancing its logistics network by inaugurating a new 13.4 km rail line. This expansion aligns with the commissioning of its 5 MTPA alumina refinery at Lanjigarh in Odisha’s Kalahandi district, ensuring seamless transportation of raw materials and finished goods.
The enhanced rail infrastructure is expected to significantly improve efficiency, with the capacity to handle up to 20 racks per day. The addition of six new loop lines within the plant yard, supported by an advanced electronic signaling system, further streamlines operations. A key technological advancement in the project is the transition from Relay Room Interlocking to Electronic Interlocking (EI), a shift from manual to digital signalling that enhances safety, operational efficiency, and equipment longevity.
This initiative also supports Vedanta’s commitment to sustainability. By optimizing rail logistics, the company will reduce carbon emissions by 262 tons of CO₂ annually, contributing to its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 or earlier.
Commenting on the development, Sunil Gupta, Chief Operating Officer of Vedanta Aluminium, said, “The commissioning of the 13.4 km rail line at Vedanta Lanjigarh is a transformational step that enhances logistics, reduces turnaround times, and supports our long-term production goals. By integrating modern rail infrastructure with digital innovation, we continue to set new benchmarks in the aluminium industry.”
