Punjab, 30/04/2025: Talwandi Sabo Power Ltd (TSPL), a part of Vedanta Ltd, has started a big new plant near its power station in Mansa, Punjab. This plant is the largest of its kind in the state and turns crop waste into useful fuel.
The plant can turn 500 tonnes of crop stubble into bio-pellets every day. These pellets are a clean fuel made from burning crop waste in a special way. Instead of using coal, which pollutes the air, TSPL can now use these bio-pellets to make electricity in a cleaner way.
Farmers in Punjab often burn their crop stubble after harvesting, which causes serious air pollution. Now, instead of burning it, they can sell the stubble to TSPL. This gives them extra money and helps keep the air clean.
In the last rice-growing season, the plant turned over 800,000 tonnes of stubble into 640,000 tonnes of bio-pellets. This helps reduce coal use by 5% and cuts pollution from the power plant. The company also buys more torrefied biomass from the market to burn along with coal.
“This project is a good example of working together to solve pollution and help farmers,” said Adarsh Pal Vig, head of the Punjab Pollution Control Board.
Rajinder Singh Ahuja, the head of Vedanta’s power business, said the company faced some challenges but stayed focused on helping the environment and supporting India’s move toward cleaner energy.
