Vedanta’s Vizag General Cargo Berth (VGCB), a part of Vedanta Aluminium, has reached a major milestone by receiving MV Captain Leonidas—one of the largest bauxite ships to ever dock in India. This marks a new record in cargo handling at Visakhapatnam port.
Earlier, the port had also handled another large ship, MV Huahine, which brought in 9,900 metric tons of manganese ore. That was the biggest single-cargo shipment ever received at an Indian port. These back-to-back achievements show VGCB’s growing strength in large-scale cargo operations.
MV Captain Leonidas is a massive vessel, with a beam of 50 meters, a draft of 17.9 meters, and a dead weight of over 200,000 tons. Successfully handling such a ship proves that VGCB meets global standards in port operations.
The unloading was completed in just five days, highlighting the port’s efficiency. This not only saves time but also reduces costs for shipping companies, making VGCB a smart choice for bulk cargo movement.
Chikkala Satish Kumar, CEO and Whole Time Director of VGCB, said the achievement shows their commitment to excellence. He added that this success helps position Vizag as a leading global cargo hub.
VGCB is a subsidiary of Vedanta Ltd. and has a 30-year contract from 2010 to upgrade and operate bulk cargo facilities at Visakhapatnam’s outer harbor. With modern infrastructure and strong performance, VGCB is playing a key role in India’s maritime growth.
